32767 view(s) On November, at their Gaydon facility, Aston Martin’ unveiled the 6.0-litre V12 DBR9. The DBR9 was styled by Aston Martin Racing’s own design team, which extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics to optimise the aerodynamics. In the cockpit, a carbon composite dashboard, lightweight racing seat and instrument panels help the car to meet its 1,100kg minimum,giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 550bhp per tonne. To lead the marque’s return to international motorsport, a new division called Aston Martin Racing was been created in partnership with Prodrive . Initially the Banbury based motorsport and automotive technology specialist was "just" responsble for Aston Martin Racing’s global operations, but in 2007 Mr Richards deepened P{rodrives involvement when he played a pivotal role in the take over buy out of the Aston Martin company from Ford Motor Corporation.
2005
After an intensive testing programme the DBR9 made its debut in March 2005 during the Sebring 12hrs. Running two cars Aston Martin Racing scored a surpise win against strong oppostition from Corvette C6R and the Maserati MC12.
Back in Europe they immidiately started to prepare for the Le Mans 24hrs, a return to La Sarthe after 46 year. Aston won the 1959 edition with Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby in the DBR1 and in recognition of this, the DBR9 carried the same green and yellow livery.
Although Aston started from pole, several technical glitches hampered both DBR9's and after 24hrs only managed third in the LMGT1 category, behind arch-rivals Corvette Racing.
2006
In 2006, the DBR9 was less successful, finishing second behind the Corvette at both Sebring and Le Mans.
At Le Mans the lead DBR9 driven by Pedro Lamy, Stephane Ortelli and Stephane Sarrazin suffered a clutch problem in the 21st hour, forcing it to pit for lengthy repairs. The pitstop lasted 45 minutes and resulted in car 009 dropping down to fifth in class, much to the disappointment of the thousands of Aston Martin Racing fans in the record 230,000 crowd.
The team's other DBR9, which started on pole position, was another favourite for honours, but its chances of victory diminished when it suffered a cracked oil pipe on lap four. Tomas Enge, Darren Turner and Andrea Piccini staged a fabulous fight back to move from 48th to 6th overall, and second in GT1.
There was also a strong performance by the Team Modena DBR9. The David Brabham, Nelson Piquet and Antonio Garcia car finished ninth overall and fourth in GT1.
Despite not winning Sebring and Le Mans, Aston Martin Racing regularly challenged Corvette Racing for victory in the American Le Mans Series, with victories at the New England Grand Prix, Grand Prix of Utah, Grand Prix of Mosport, Petit Le Mans, and Monterey Sports Car Championships. Aston Martin capped their 2006 ALMS season by finishing second in the GT1 Manufacturer's Championship, earning the factory team an automatic entry to the 2007 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In the Le Mans Endurance Series, the Larbre Competition Aston Martin took the Team's Championship, with victories at the 1000 Kilometres of Istanbul and 1000 Kilometres of the Nurburgring, a second place finish at the 1000 Kilometres of Jarama, and a fifth place finish at the 1000 Kilometres of Donington.
The DBR9 came into the 2006 FIA GT Championship being title contender favourites, but the season was somewhat lacklustre with only two victories at Mugello and Dubai. The Phoenix Racing Aston Martin DBR9 narrowly missed out on victory at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. BMS Scuderia Italia cited a problem with finding the right tyre compound with their Pirellis as the factor for their lack of success.
