1988: Silk Cut #2
27303 view(s)
As the Group 44 effort faded at the end of 1987, Jaguar commissioned TWR to also campaign their latest XJR-9 in the IMSA GTP in 1988.
The Jaguar XJR-9 was an evolution of the XJR-8, built for both Group C and IMSA Camel GTP, debuting with a victory in at the 1988 24 Hours of Daytona.
Again there were only detail changes and one of both the XJR-6 and XJR-8 chassis were upgraded to join the new XJR-9s in the 1988 season. For Le Mans TWR build a special low drag version, the XJR-9LM.
The XJR-9LM incorperated all the lessons learned with the XJR-8 and with good results as exactly 31 years since the last famous win in 1957, Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace took the checkered flag.
Jaguar's success at Le Mans marked the first time since 1980 that Porsche had not won Le Mans.
That same year Jaguar also clinched the World Sports Car Championship for the second time.
