15517 view(s) Nissan is one of three big manufacturers in the Japanese Grand Touring
Championship (JGTC). Its Skyline which had been running in the GT500
class for years would cease production in 2002.
Searching for a suitable replacement, and looking with one eye at the
success achieved by Porsche 's GT3, Nismo's first step was to develop
a car for the "smaller" GT class. Under guidance of Yakuta Suzuki (not related) the 350Z was designed
to be a simple and straightforward GT, which its clientele could run
according to both FIA GT and A(LM)S rules.
JGTC 2003
In 2003 Hasemi Motorsports entered a Nissan Fairlady Z (the official
Japanese name for the 350Z) in the JGTC Under the GT300 rules the 3,5l
V6 was restricted to 350bhp (450bhp with FIA restrictors).
In the Fairlady's debut year Mitsuhiro Kinoshita and Masataka Yanagida,
scored 4 podiums in 8 races with 4 second places (Fuji, Motegi et Suzuka)
as their best results. As a result the team finished second in the championship
behind Taisan Advan's Porsche GT3
JGTC 2004
In February 2004 Nismo revealed the car that has to replace the "famous"
Skyline at the Tokyo Autosalon. The 350Z GT500 is build with the most
radical interpretation of the GT500 rules to date. The way its looks
,Toyota and Honda will have to face strong opposition.
The Ring 24hrs
Besides running four cars in the JGTC a sole Z3650 will enter the famous
German Endurance race the Ring 24hrs.
