32767 view(s) Designed to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the F-40 was the ultimate
Supercar to hit the streets in the 80's. But its low slung lines and huge spoiler made it all to clear that this car was designed to race.
Debuting in the 1989/90 IMSA Series (by Charles Pozzi) it wasn't until '92' that a F-40 would race on European soil. Initial successes were scored in the Italian Supercar championship, but it was in the BPR that the F-40' would race in anger and against serious competition.
The BPR sported an unparalleled collection of Supercars; Jaguar, Ferrari, Lotus, Porsche, and the new McLaren F1 GTR all competed in 2 classes.
Of the 3 teams that raced F-40's during the BPR, it was mostly the Ennea
F40 GT that took the fight to the superior Mc Laren GT1's. Tuned by Michelotto, its '96' GTE (evolutione) BI-turbo V8 had grown to 3,5 l with max. output of 635 bhp. Even with the big Evo rear spoiler it was the fastest car. ..in a straight line. Although it scored class wins at Andersdorp and Zuhai the GTE suffered from poor reliability, with the gearbox as its main Achilles heel. The same problems handicapped the Le Mans entries in 95 and 96. A car that
barely lasted the BPR 3hr sprints had little chance of surviving a full 24hrs.
No longer capable of competing with the new breed of GTP's the F-40 were sold of to "retirement" in the quit pastures of National racing where the were last seen at the 2000 BRDC GT.
