Mulsanne corner
Best Sportscar Tech Site reviews the V12 in depth.

BMW's LMR prototype set the mold for every LMP to precede it.
Single roll hoop and raised footbox has now become the bench mark.
BMW's modern Le Mans assault started off a bit auspiciously in '98 with the V12 LM, but lessons learned there contributed to '99s very successful LMR.

The most controversial feature in the 99 car was thesingle roll over hoop.
BMW smartly utilized an over looked rule within the ACO regulations and used the hoop to create a cleaner airflow to the rear spoiler..
So, fixing the issues learned with the V12 LM and having a thorough read of the rule book, BMW set about the 1999 season to kick some ass!
And ass they did kick.

Following the BMW tradition the Bavarian firm commisioned Jenny Holzer (a conceptual artist) to create an LMR "art car"
Although presented at the LM 99 Pre qualifications the car wasn't entered in the 24 hrs. It was only raced once in the 2000 ALMS.

Scale Beemers
If you want to race a Bavarian (scale) car easiest pick will be the Carrera BMW.
All you have to do is to make the body lighter (use a Dremel) and for the Exel sidewinder a small housing for the Gear.

Its strong, it's already painted and the latest version even has lights!.

On the down side this has made the car so popular that they fill more than half off the grid.
However this doesn't mean that they all have to look the same, although mostly white...there are some good looking Beemers out there!

Cockpit detail
One of the advantages of an open topped slot(model) car is that all the cockpit detail will remain visible. Here's a nice ref picture so start detailing.

The Carrera cockpit shows most of the detail and forms a good base to begin with.
Firts thing you should do is to kick out the original driver. The sleek bodylines deserve beter than the fat Playmobil pilot that comes with the standard car.
Best choice is to get one of the Q-model resin pilots.

Super detaillist can also use the Le Mans Miniatures pilot.
It is intended for their 97 Joest LMP, but it was the same Tom Kristensen tha drove the BMW in 99. Specially the helmet decals will seduce any Concourse jury.

Bussiness back end
A sight seen most by the ALMS competition in the late ninties. Unfortunately the least detaled part on the Carrera Body.

The photo below shows you where improvements can be made.
