The Audi TT-R is an unlikely GT, had it not been for the Nürburg 24hrs it would never have made this list.
The TT started its racing career with the rebirth of the DTM. It needed Audi tuner Abt to convince the Inglostad firm that there was a potential winner in the swelty coupe. It took them 2 years before the performance of the TT was on par with Mercedes. After a learning year in 2000, Abt Sportsline celebrated the first DTM victories during the 2001 season with the further developed Abt-Audi TT-R. In 2002, Laurent Aiello clinched the championship.

With the DTM switching back to 4 door saloons for 2004 Abt looked for other races where it could enter the TT. In 2003 they entered a 3rd generation TT in the famous Nürburg 24hrs. They nearly won and showed that the TT also had potential as an endurance runner.
Audi's Nürburgring project is set up in a similar way to that of Opel, with an experienced contractor handling the day-to-day development and preparation. This is the Abt Sportsline team, long-time associates of Audi from the heyday of Super Touring competition, and the instigators of the marque's involvement in the current DTM . The factory side of things is handled by the quattro Gmbh, Audi's "skunk works" for special projects.
