The Viper GTE car was raced with a rules waiver, albeit an unusual one, it ran with a slightly smaller engine than the production car stroked down to just eight litres.
The Viper still has one of the largest engines in the GTE class though, the V10 is now restricted to produce around 480-490bhp. with twin 29.1mm restrictors mounted at the leading edge of the bonnet.
In 2013 two cars were run as a full works entry in the Le Mans 24 Hours, with the #53 finishing 6th in class and 24th overall.
In just its second full year of the program SRT Motorsports won two of three IMSA championships contested in the class and finished second in the 2014 GTLM manufacturer championship.
The GTLM works program was abruptly cancelled for 2015 leaving the Riley team to run the remaining privateer cars in IMSA's GTD/GT3 class.
A single GTLM participated in the 2015 LM 24hrs by Viper Exchange.com/Riley Motorsports. American Marc Miller joining Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen as co-driver. The team drove the No. 53 Dodge Viper GTS-R in the GT-am class.
The rear wing of the Viper was originally mounted 25mm below the roof line (above) but at Le Mans in 2015 the wing was raised to the highest level ever seen in GTE. This left the car with a slightly odd look but the team saw the light of the situation and resurrected the Superbird/Road Runner brand!
Bleekemolen qualified fourth in class and continued with a strong opening shift in the race, leading for most the third hour. Keating continued to maintain a top-four position during the second shift. Miller took the third shift through much of the night. As the team entered the final shift in fifth place, Bleekemolen began to notice issues with the gearbox, which even after replacing the gearbox failed to resolve the problems, the No. 53 car was forced to retire from the race at 1:45 PM, having completed 304 laps.
