21934 view(s) The R8R was Audi's first "toe in the water" effort on what would result in the most succesfull campaign in recent Endurance history.
Just how much the Inglostad mark was focussed on Le Mans, was illustrated by the fact that they developped both a Coupe (R8C) and an open Prototype during the 98/99 season.
By deviding their efforts over 2 different cars Audi's recources were far strechted. During the 12 hrs of Sebring, only one of the R8R's was ready to be thouroughly tested before tackling the LM 24 hrs.
A third place showed promise of things to come, but upon arrival at the May LM test it was clear that the Audi's were no match for the Toyota's and BMW's on outright speed .
But at least the reliability of the R8R was, where the faster competion crashed & burned, the R8R had a troublefree run to 3rd.
