The R8R was Audi's first "toe in the water" effort on what would result in the most succesfull campaign in recent Endurance history.

Just how much the Inglostad mark was focussed on Le Mans, was illustrated by the fact that they developped both a Coupe (R8C) and an open Prototype during the 98/99 season.
By deviding their efforts over 2 different cars Audi's recources were far strechted. During the 12 hrs of Sebring, only one of the R8R's was ready to be thouroughly tested before tackling the LM 24 hrs.

A third place showed promise of things to come, but upon arrival at the May LM test it was clear that the Audi's were no match for the Toyota's and BMW's on outright speed .
But at least the reliability of the R8R was, where the faster competion crashed & burned, the R8R had a troublefree run to 3rd.

Slot remarks

Cursa models has released the R8R as a dedicated Slotkit which is good news as it needs no modifications, the body easily mounts on all adjustable slot chassis. It even has a nice performance feature; the turbo intake ducts actually direct cool air to the motor.

But Cursa's performance aims also have a bad side. To get a low as possible C.G. the model is a bit too low and too long and the heigth of the rear wing is definately too low.

Nothing as exessive as their Saleen though. And it is a nice addition for those who love to build a nice LMP.
